Student Perspective

How does school fit into the already-busy lives that so many adult students are juggling?

In our Day-in-the-Life Series, we interview students to share what inspired them to go back to school and how they are making it work for them.

Where were you in life before you enrolled in school? What job(s) and/or responsibilities did you have?

I’m disabled veteran retired from the military so I haven’t worked since 2015.

We’re so grateful for your service. Can you tell us a little more about your time in the military and where you served?

My time in the Army was a great experience for me. I joined in March 1995 and did my basic training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In June of 1995, I was assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where I stayed until February 1999. I then was assigned to Baumholder, Germany. In December 2000, my unit was deployed to Kosovo until May 2001, and in Aug 2001, I was assigned back to Fort Sill. My unit deployed to Iraq in March 2003 for 366 days. We returned to the States in March 2004. I was assigned to Fort Polk, Louisiana, in June 2004 and was there until August 2005 when I was medically discharged.

What made you decide to enroll?

I was looking to use my GI Bill benefits, and Vista seemed like a good place to start.

What program did you choose?

I have completed the business program at Vista and have an associate degree in that. I also completed the dental program at Vista, and now I am doing the HVAC program.

How have you found your experience at Vista to be so far?

My experience with Vista College has been a long but fun ride. The staff is great, the atmosphere is great, and the overall experience has been a good one.

What were the biggest challenges you had in adding school into your daily life?

Making time to study with a family and babysitting my four-year-old grandson.

Joe Messenger Typical Week

Take us through how you fit school in your day-to-day life during a typical week.

Monday/Wednesday: I watch my grandson until it’s time for me to go to school.
Tuesday/Thursday: I clean and take care of the house and all that until it’s time for me to go to school.
Friday: This is my day to chill.
Saturday/Sunday: Football

I am a pretty simple person. I don’t stress a whole lot.

What advice would you give to someone considering going back to school?

Plan for the future, make school a priority, and remember: don’t stress. You got this!
