VISTA COLLEGE NAMED ONE OF TOP MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOLS IN THE U.S. FOR 2013
Victory Media releases 4th annual list honoring the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools in the nation doing the most to embrace and support America’s veterans as students
DALLAS, TX – October 8, 2012 – Vista College has been named one of the 2013 military friendly schools in the U.S., joining the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that have programs to support the country’s service members, veterans, and spouses at students. Now in its fourth year, the 2013 list of Military Schools was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The survey results were tested by Ernst & Young LLP based upon weightings and methodology established by Victory Media. Vista College made the list along with 69 other Texas institutions and hundreds more from other states across the country.
The institutions on this year’s list “exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience,” according to a news release from Victory Media Inc., which publishes G.I. Jobs magazine and other military-related magazines. Each year, schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country. A detailed list of schools will be highlighted in G.I. Jobs magazine’s Guide to Military Friendly Schools, distributed in October to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel.
“We are honored to be named one of the 2013 Top Military Friendly Schools,” said Jim Tolbert, CEO, Vista College. “Our military scholarships and participation in programs like the MGIB, 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon are only part of the equation. We have designated military admissions reps at each of our campuses to help any active duty, veteran or dependent understand the admissions process. We are extremely proud to serve those who have dedicated their lives to serving us and our country.”
This year’s Military Friendly Schools list criteria incorporate a survey of over 3,000 actual student veterans. This feedback provides prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience at particular institutions based on peer reviews from current students. Seven percent of Vista College’s student population is currently veterans.
“I would definitely recommend someone to go to Vista College because of the great teachers, great facilities and all around, great place.” said Specialist Scott Jones, United States Army and Vista College Alumni.
Vista College offers many programs online and at ground campuses located in Amarillo, Beaumont, El Paso, Longview, Lubbock, and Las Cruces, New Mexico. Vista College has also been designated as military friendly by the Service members Opportunity Colleges (SOC). To earn this distinction, Vista College works with the military to help those in active service, the reserves, or the National Guard gain a Certificate, Diploma or associates Degree.
“Our mission is to provide active military, veterans and military dependents with high quality, specialized career preparation or enhancement to meet and cope with technological changes resulting in employment and career success,” added Kevin Randolph, Corporate Director for Military Admissions, Vista College. “At Vista, there are no application fees, we provide maximum transfer of credits from military experience and college credits, career services assistance and scholarships are available to those who qualify.”
Other military programs Vista College participates in include MGIB Montgomery GI Bill, 9/11 GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment Service Program, Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP), Yellow Ribbon, Tuition Assistance for Active Duty (GoArmy.Ed), My Career Advancement Account (MyCAA), Survivors & Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA), Selected Reserve Program and Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP).
