85-Year Old Graduates Vista College Beaumont Campus

Dorothy Evans to Graduate with Network Administration Diploma

Beaumont, TX – June 27, 2012 – Vista College is proud to announce the oldest graduate from the college’s history: Dorothy Evans, 85, will graduate this Friday, June 29, 7 – 9 p.m., from the Beaumont Campus with a Diploma in network administration.  The graduation ceremony will take place at the Jefferson Theatre, 345 Fannin Street, Beaumont, Texas 77701.

Dorothy was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1927, and graduated from high school in 1944.  In 1992 she moved to Beaumont when one of her sons got married and invited her to move.  Ms. Evans has five children (three boys and two girls).

In August of 2011, she was looking for a part-time job online. She saw a position for a mystery shopper, and as she proceeded to fill out the application, it asked her questions about her interests in school.  Within the next few minutes she received a call from an admissions representative from Vista College. She scheduled a campus tour and before long, Dorothy enrolled. While Ms. Evans has always enjoyed computers and previously studied computer programming while living in Philadelphia, this was an endeavor that was not planned.

“I would rather wear out than rust out. That’s what my mother always said,” said Dorothy Evans. Upon graduation, Dorothy plans to study for her A+ Certification Exam and work as a computer technician.

True to her mother’s philosophy, Ms. Evans has held a number of positions over the years.  From 2000 to present time, she has worked as a home based business owner, responsible for recruiting, employing, and training by phone, Internet or in person.  From 2010 to 2011 she served as a tutor with Experience Corps in Beaumont, helping children from first to fourth grade improve their math and English skills as well as their personal behavior.  She has also worked in Beaumont for H&R Block, helping clients complete their tax returns; the U.S. Postal Service Encoding Center, inspecting and correcting all mail not properly zip coded or addresses; and the U.S. Census Bureau, visiting occupants on the Census Bureau list who did not return their questionnaires.  She has served as President/Treasurer of the Jefferson County AARP Chapter 923, and she has participated in numerous self-help classes in public speaking, English composition, code of dress, leadership and management.

“We could not be more proud or more impressed with Ms. Evans,” said James Powell, Vista College Campus Director. “It just goes to show that it’s never too late to learn something new.   She is, without a doubt, an inspiration to everyone around her.”
