WHAT: Four Amarillo residents and will be honored with prestigious Vista College graduate awards at commencement ceremonies. The New Horizon Award will be given to one student representing each education field for demonstrating leadership during his or her study and involvement in the community. The Student of the Year Award is the top honor among the graduating class. The Vista College Amarillo recipients are as follows:
Jessica Kinzy – New Horizon Award for Business – With her daughter as her motivation, Kinzy persevered through many difficult challenges including medical and car issues. She credits her family and Vista College’s Director of Education Donna Duncan as well as her instructors Rhonda Silverman and Brenda Telemantez for supporting her and helping her achieve her goal of graduating with an Associates Degree in Business.
Jonathan Long – New Horizon Award for Networking Administration – After dropping out of high school, Long drifted from job to job. He began to realize that constantly changing jobs in the manual labor workforce was not allowing him to advance in his career and would not enable him to have any benefits from retirement one day. With perseverance and determination he was able to overcome many personal challenges and completed his Network Administration Associates Degree. He is now employed with the City of Amarillo.
Shawna Mathis – New Horizon Award for Healthcare Programs – With a number one goal of finishing school in order to provide a steady income for her family, Mathis was motivated to work hard and will graduate with a Medical Assistant Degree. Her experience at Vista College has been life changing, giving her confidence and support, and it has inspired her to possibly continue her education to pursue a career nursing. She is forever grateful for the dedication of the teachers and staff.
Frank McCoy – Student of the Year Award – A graduate of Vista College’s HVAC program, McCoy is a perfect example of any instructor’s ideal student. His superior work ethic allowed him to graduate at the top of his class while working a full-time job and raising a family. His success is directly related to his hard work and commitment to be the best person he can be.
Additionally, Brenda Stell has been named valedictorian and Juanita Andersonsalutatorian.
